Creating Opportunity for Indigenous Summer Students
Partnership with Northwestern Polytechnic brings talented students to the ATCO team
We value a fresh perspective and new ideas, which is why we recently partnered with the business program at Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) to provide Work Integrated Learning opportunities in our Finance department for Indigenous students.
“By partnering with NWP, we can attract more students from Northern Alberta and Indigenous communities in the region,” says Tanya Rexin, Manager, Indigenous Relations. “Supporting Indigenous students’ education and career development is important for us, and this partnership furthers our commitment to creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace.”
Indigenous student Aedon Janes studied at NWP before transferring to the University of Alberta, Bachelor of Commerce program. He notes how the practical learning environment at NWP has contributed to his post-secondary success. “Attending Northwestern Polytechnic provided me with practical skills that have been critical in my development as a student, employee, and person.”
Aedon started working as a student with ATCO Electric in 2021 and joined Frontec in the finance department in 2022, where he is currently a summer student.
“I love the culture at Frontec and being able to experience Work Integrated Learning. The flexibility to work remotely allows me to continue working part-time throughout the school year, without the need to relocate,” says Aedon, noting how valuable the opportunity has been to grow and develop his skills in the workplace while still attending school.
Gwendolynn Robe-From is in the Bachelor of Business Administration program at NWP and as a member of the Indigenous community, she is encouraged to see that ATCO is an inclusive employer.
“It’s important to create hiring practices that provide equal opportunity to the Indigenous people and allow individuals to access meaningful employment,” says Gwendolynn, noting the importance of building partnerships.
Gwendolynn started in May and has been enjoying her experience.
“This has been an incredible journey filled with learning opportunities and growth. I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
Through our ongoing partnership with Northwestern Polytechnic, we look forward to welcoming more Finance students in the future.
